چکیده

Small boron clusters as individual species in the gas phase are reviewed. While the family of known boron compounds is rich and diverse, a large body of hitherto unknown chemistry of boron has been recently identified. Free boron clusters have been recently characterized using photoelectron spectroscopy and ab initio calculations, which have established the planar or quasi-planar shapes of small boron clusters for the first time. This has surprised the scientific community, as the chemistry of boron has been diversely featured by three-dimensional structures. The planarity of the species has been further elucidated on the basis of multiple aromaticity, multiple antiaromaticity, and conflicting aromaticity. Although mostly observed in the gas phase, pure boron clusters are promising molecules for coordination chemistry as potential new ligands and for materials science as new building blocks. The use of pure boron species as novel ligands has commenced, suggesting many new chemistries

Boronyl chemistry: the BO group as a new ligand in gas-phase clusters and synthetic compounds.

Boronyl (BO) is a monovalent σ radical with a robust B≡O triple bond. Although BO/BO(-) are isovalent to CN/CN(-) and CO, the chemistry of boronyl has remained relatively unknown until recently, whereas CN/CN(-) and CO are well-known inorganic ligands. Further analogy may be established for BO versus H or Au ligands, which are all monovalent σ radicals. This Account intends to provide an overvi...

Understanding boron through size-selected clusters: structure, chemical bonding, and fluxionality.

Boron is an interesting element with unusual polymorphism. While three-dimensional (3D) structural motifs are prevalent in bulk boron, atomic boron clusters are found to have planar or quasi-planar structures, stabilized by localized two-center-two-electron (2c-2e) σ bonds on the periphery and delocalized multicenter-two-electron (nc-2e) bonds in both σ and π frameworks. Electron delocalization...

Photoelectron spectroscopy of boron-gold alloy clusters and boron boronyl clusters: B3Au(n)(-) and B3(BO)n(-) (n = 1, 2).

Photoelectron spectroscopy and density-functional theory are combined to study the structures and chemical bonding in boron-gold alloy clusters and boron boronyl clusters: B3Au(n)(-) and B3(BO)n(-) (n = 1, 2). Vibrationally resolved photoelectron spectra are obtained for all four species and the B-Au and B-BO clusters exhibit similar spectral patterns, with the latter species having higher elec...

New ligand platforms featuring boron-rich clusters as organomimetic substituents.

200 years of research with carbon-rich molecules have shaped the development of modern chemistry. Research pertaining to the chemistry of boron-rich species has historically trailed behind its more distinguished neighbor (carbon) in the periodic table. Notably, a potentially rich and, in many cases, unmatched field of coordination chemistry using boronrich clusters remains fundamentally underde...

Hydrocarbon analogues of boron clusters--planarity, aromaticity and antiaromaticity.

An interesting feature of elemental boron and boron compounds is the occurrence of highly symmetric icosahedral clusters. The rich chemistry of boron is also dominated by three-dimensional cage structures. Despite its proximity to carbon in the periodic table, elemental boron clusters have been scarcely studied experimentally and their structures and chemical bonding have not been fully elucida...
